For about a year I’ve put off replacing my Apple iMac with a Mac Pro until Snow Leopard arrived.

But thats nothing because I’ve been hanging on to my old, tired and very battered Sony Ericsson mobile phone while I’ve been waiting for the iPhone to eventually come to my mobile phone network

Waiting looks to have paid off because the new 27inch iMac with the Nehalem processors certainly look sweet. I even got to play with magic mouse at an Apple store the other day and have to say first impressions were very nice.

So new iMac will be a nice Xmas pressie

The iPhone is a few months off yet but I can hold on a bit longer

The temptation to buy a Google Android phone was strong though. It came close especially when Google announced that Perl was available for it.

Gosh having Perl on a “mobile” device brings back memories. I had Perl running on my Psion Revo PDA back in the day.

Unfortunately no Perl on the iPhone thus far… unless its jail broken!

Still perusing the iTunes App Store does show up a few things Perl. O’Reilly have “ported” quite a few of their books to the store.

Amazingly i am still an app virgin on my iPod Touch! So I thought I’d give it a go and purchase Perl Pocket Reference app.

I can’t say its this e-book is going to set my world alight but for £1.79 I couldn’t really go wrong and you will never know when it will come in handy.

Google Reader update (for iPhone)

I’ve been using Google Reader to do all my RSS feeds on my iPod Touch for quite a while now and find this a much better experience than reading on a computer (especially if u have lots of RSS feeds like me!).

Up till now this as been using the generic mobile version of Google Reader… thus all websites have been nicely squashed down to just readable text & essential images (getting rid of logos & formatting).

Recently Google Reader introduced a iPhone beta version. I tried it but didn’t like it compared to what I had. However they’ve now updated Google Reader so now this is the default for iPhone & iPod Touch ;-(

Anyway been using for past 2-3 days and have actually got use to it and now find it better than mobile version.

However it would be nice if all RSS subscriptions I have published the (main) content within the feed. In particular I’m looking at you Perlmonks ;-(

After all the speculation about the arrival of an iPhone it’s finally “appeared”…. but not from Apple! It’s from LinkSys (Cisco)

Actually I’m glad because I think if Apple did produce a product called the “iPhone” it would diminish the iPod brand name. So to me this doesn’t make good marketing sense (not that I’m an expert in marketing!).

I’m all for the iPod having phone capabilities and so should be a future optional feature. But first I would prefer the iPod to have better PDA functionality and bigger screen for better video playback.

PS. How did everyone miss the fact that the iPhone trademark was held by Cisco! Very strange? However perhaps this won’t stop Apple anyway!?
