The first London.pm Perl tech talk of 2010 occurred last week at the good old Aunty Beeb. The theme was “what’s new in Perl” and as per usual it was an enlightening and fun evening.

Even more so when one of the presentations was punctuated by loud cheers from the the ending of the The One Show, which was being broadcast live beneath our very feet. Unbeknown to me and probably most of the Perl mongers present was that Boy George was the star guest!

Still not to be out done the Perl talks were also ended on a triumphant high note with the announcement that the mad scientist of perl himself would be speaking at the next London tech talk!

Looking forward to that

/I3az/

PS. And if Damien Conway’s talk is even half as good as his classic OSCON 2008 talk then it will be an experience not to be missed.

Bit like buses…. you wait for one and then two come along together

Set at the shiny Factset offices in bustling Liverpool Street the room provided less space compared to last time (mainly because of large boardroom table!) but was still full to the rafters with around 20+ mongers sitting on very comfortable reclining leather chairs (probably too comfy and too reclining!)

The talks that caught my eyes the most were….

Refactoring With Roles / Role Driven Programming by Ovid

Perl on the JVM by Ben Evans

I have been following Ovid blog articles on this recently so I knew what was coming but it was still a tour de force presentation by the man.

With Java it was interesting to know the limitations that currently exist in jRuby & Jython and that OpenJKD7 (next version Java/JVM) would introduce “invokedynamic” which would really make these languages start to shine on JVM.

This looks like a very good time for Perl to jump on the Java/JVM gravy train!

And I see there as been a good discussion about this talk in Ovid’s use.perl journal. Its amazing what comes out of the “woodwork” because Language::P is something I never heard off before and does look very interesting. NB. Think of it has PyPy for Perl… so that should be pLpL, plpl or PlPl

/I3az/

PS. Recommendation for future talks…. make sure there is a break in the middle. I think having a couple of Abbot Ale’s beforehand probably wasn’t a good idea

Update: This “Less code” talks on the 16th April 2009 are now listed on London.pm tech talk page

This was the title for the London Perl Mongers technical talk held last night at the BBC offices in White City.

And I was there! This is the first time I’ve dipped my toe into the London Perl Mongers world (in a corporeal sense that is… I do frequent the London.pm mailing list and have occasionally raised my head above the parapet there )

I went along because wanted to experience a real life Perl event and I have to say I was very impressed. The event was extremely well produced & organised in nice plush/swanky offices with high tech presentation and with a well attended (40+) & diverse audience being treated to some excellent presentations using the right mix of technical details & joviality… ie. a fun learning experience.

I particularly enjoyed Piers Cawley talk. Originally titled “Moose for Ruby programmers” we quickly found this was just slight bum steer to giving a provocative & insightful MooseX::Declare talk

NB. and also extremely entertaining talk! we now all know what the sign language is for moo sex

I certainly hope to make more London.pm events in the future. At the moment their regular socials conflict with my personal calendar… however I’ll be doing my best to wriggle out of some of those

So what about Moose? Well the event for me wasn’t about learning Moose because I was sold on it ages ago. So its good to see it spreading even further in the Perl consciousness & community.

So to me its “Moose is here“.

And if you want an additional soundbite then it would be “… and MooseX::Declare is the future“.

/I3az/
